They might be a door greeter, hand out food at race rest stop, help clean up, maybe even handle money (those types generally have a strong connection with the org and are trusted). I’ve even volunteered as a judge at strongman competitions… as a 6’4” 330 lb man, I’ve never been asked to work security. Because THAT job, like anyone working first aid for instance, comes with liability. People like that fuck up and people get hurt or die. Have I seen doctors/medics volunteer as first aid? Yup! Have I seen Boy Scouts (most Boy Scouts have a base level knowledge of first aid and could a least apply a bandage without making too much of a mess) volunteer in the same role? Nope!

Tipped jobs can be awesome because you keep your tips and its often very lucrative. Be careful though because the normal workers will always try to cheat you out of them. At the end of the day you’re a volunteer. I’ve just left if the job sucked before. Also there’s usually nothing stopping you from just joining in as a spectator as you’re already past security. This is so dumb! The only reason someone would accept that security job for free would be to abuse it and rule the festival drug ring themselves XD Look I volunteered at festivals as a lost kid station or the first aid station. Not security. That is a job you need to pay people for. Assuming this is America, this could also be incredibly illegal. Most states don’t allow people to practice private security without a license. The group putting on the event might be able to pull the, “we didn’t pay them, so technically we didn’t hire them” route, but if shit goes south at this event that’s not going to matter. Often festivals rely on volunteers to keep their costs down and tickets affordable for the masses. This allows them to spend the ticket sales on the programming of multiple big name acts.
