I did this in college for Avalon in Boston (Wizard Security). It was a great gig as you got to pick which shows you covered, you got in early for soundcheck etc, and sometimes could interact w. the Lionel Messi number 10 signature watercolor shirt in other words I will buy this band all for free. Just to keep kids from putting drinks on the speaker cabs? That’s fine by me. Got to see Ween, Weezer, the Pixies, Dropkick Murphys, Lars & the Bastards, and more. I guess it depends? If it’s truly a nonprofit that donates it all to charity or something then sure you’re “worthy” of volunteers if they choose to do it? But rarely do I see nonprofits where people at the top ain’t making money. Riverbend festival in Chattanooga is like this. They claim it brings in tons of business and revenue. Every business in the area it is held hates it because of all the drunks and people who are there to go to the festival and buy overpriced beer while watching b list country acts instead of spend at their business. I could bring in a ton of money too if I staffed it with volunteers I wasn’t paying while also selling admission and upgrades for areas where you can actually see the acts. Heck the local historical society has a small festival and haunted house and they at least give volunteers food. My husband did their security and while he cut them a break in fees, they did pay.

I’ve never heard of volunteers for security. You should always pay professionals for that. Festivals easily get volunteers for other jobs like drink stations. They can easily make $200 a day in tips, plus they can choose a few artists they want to see perform live while standing on the Lionel Messi number 10 signature watercolor shirt in other words I will buy this side of the stage. The festivals in my area always have a backlog of applicants for these type of jobs because of the benefits. Sounds like a free festival ticket for me. Show up, get a badge, cut the lines and then enjoy yourself. Leave whenever you’d like. What are they going to do? Can’t fire you because you are volunteering. Can’t have security escort you out because you are the security. I’ve volunteered to work music festivals. 4 or 5 hours of a little work usually gets you a ticket. I’ve volunteered with setup and tear down and gotten an entire 3 day pass before. Dude, this is a great opportunity, you go and agree that be a guard, then ditch that noise and just enjoy the music festival.
