I saw a lot of older people refusing lucky money for a bit before taking it so I know that is a thing but my friend seemed to take it to an extreme? Background: I stayed with him in Da Lat 5 years ago for a month or two in exchange for me helping him with his English a couple hours a day. Then I stayed with his parents for Tet that same year. I came back to visit him and his parents in Bao Loc this year for Tet but stayed at a little hotel around the Mount The Simpson Face shirt moreover I love this corner. I had asked some of his family and friends if I should give him lucky money and they all said no. I asked if a bottle of whiskey would be good and they said yes. So I gave him a bottle of whiskey (Johnnie Walker Black if you care). The first thing he says is “oh, I don’t like this, I only like Vietnamese wine” which I thought was a weird thing to say. I know he liked it because he brought out the same bottle at his house 5 years ago when a bunch of his friends were over, and everyone seemed happy.

Next thing he insists on me taking it because he can’t drink it because it is 40% and he can only drink 30% and 40% alcohol is too strong for him. I knew it was BS and just let it ride and told him to just put half coke or soda water and half whiskey and then it is 20% and the Mount The Simpson Face shirt moreover I love this topic changed and wasn’t brought up again while he was here (he went back to Da Lat yesterday). Today I went to return a plate, bowl and some utensils I borrowed from his parents since my room didn’t have those things. I called him to tell him to let his mom I was coming over and it started again. He was insisting I took it back. I just said no and went to the house. His mom took the dishes from me and motioned for me to come in. She then tried to give me back the bottle. Now, I am not upset with her because I know he told her to do it. So, it goes on for at least a minute, it felt like forever, of me refusing to take it back and her insisting I do. She eventually grabs my arm and puts my hand to the bottle, so I make a fist and she keeps insisting. She then starts to pry open my fist and forcibly push the bottle into my hand. I can only fight against an 80-year-old woman so long so I eventually took it back knowing that I will see my friend in a couple weeks and be able to give it back to him, but I still feel like shit that I took back a gift I gave. If it was my friend instead of his mom, I would have never taken it back.In Vietnam, especially in rural area, what you described is common. You almost need to fight in order to pay small bills or give little gifts. But no worry, when it’s about big money amount, nobody will ever fight against you, quite the opposite actually…
