I feel like a lot of cities that have character are based around a major river and have more historical buildings, whereas Birmingham doesn’t have a river through the Mombie Mode Acrivated Shirt in contrast I will get this centre and was bombed heavily followed by lot of car industry who pushed the council into making the city very car based rather than pedestrian friendly I think Birmingham has improved a lot in the last few years. I think it’s long suffered by being a bit of a sprawl without a tight city core. It always felt a bit like the big shops were in one area, the independents in another and the nightlife in a third and then there was a bit of a dead area between each section. Birmingham has, somewhat recently, begun transforming itself from an industrial city to a non-industrial city. It’s still early in the process. If you think it’s bad now, you should have seen it in the 80s and 90s! It’s actually much improved since then but I agree it’s not the prettiest city out there. Fortunately there are lots of really nice places nearby; Warwick, Worcester, Lichfield to name a few plus there’s lots of countryside nearby. There are also nicer suburbs like Bournville, Harborne and Bearwood which improve things if you are willing to explore a bit.

Also Birmingham has drastically improved in the Mombie Mode Acrivated Shirt in contrast I will get this past 15 years. Yes before it was a sh.t hole but now it s a much better city. I agree as the second city in England it should offer more, (especially as vibe), but uk cities cannot be compared to the ones in different countries. It s different lifestyle, different culture. As a foraigner myself when I came here loooooong time ago, eg pubs were shutting at 11pm…… Back home people start to get ready to go out at 10pm…… Many of the factories that survived the war were closed down starting in the 70s. Birmingham was a hugely industrial city. My dad used to work in a factory that made car parts and tools for Rolls Royce and lost his job when it closed in the mid 70s. The Mailbox stands about where that factory used to be. So, it’s a mixture of poor architecture choices in the 60s followed by mismatched gentrification following the closure of factories in the 70s to the 90s, and any old (typically Victorian) architecture that survived all of that.
