I know everyone is saying that he deprived it of oxygen longer the Missouri Tigers Mizzou St. Louis Shirt in other words I will buy this second time and I totally get that …. but I have no idea how mustachioed all your faces are over Reddit. Since we all know that mustache size is directly correlated with fire knowledge I’m gonna have to go with the guy in the video. In a house fire (or any fire, but scale matters) it often happens that there is not sufficient oxygen to sustain flames inside the house. When you open a door or window you reintroduce oxygen and get a flashover that’s much more violent than what you see in the video (Example). You absolutely do not want that to happen when you’re inside. Flashover is not caused by the introduction of oxygen into an environment. What you’re referring to is a backdraft. Backdraft takes place when an oxygen deprived fire is suddenly fed oxygen and violently reignites. Flashover is caused by everything in the room reaching their ignition temperatures and igniting all at once. This includes materials in the room as well as the smoke produced by combustion. Flashover can actually be mitigated by proper ventilation and the application of water. Your video is definitely an example of a flashover, but the flashover happened because a hot fire was allowed to get hotter. A lack of water and a lack of ventilation.

I’m assuming these firemen just rolled up on this fire and forced the Missouri Tigers Mizzou St. Louis Shirt in other words I will buy this door. A hose line was likely on the way and they hadn’t initiated fire attack yet. Multi story buildings like this can be difficult to ventilate sufficiently as well. If they had another 30-60 seconds, they likely could have prevented the flashover altogether, but that’s not always how it goes. The guy in the video is referring to the process as a “ventilation induced flashover”, which is why I used the term. I’m aware of the difference but I think it’s mostly semantics; in practice a backdraft does have the same characteristics as a flashover. It’s a violent ignition of the available fuel. I hear ya. And you’re right, the terminology is, generally speaking, semantics. But in the fire world, there is a pretty big gray area between what is a backdraft vs a ventilation induced flashover. This dude in the OP video is a salesman and he’s using the term “ventilation induced flashover” as a sales trap. He travels across the country to various fire departments selling the firebox in the video as a training demonstration prop. His demonstration isn’t a horrible one, and it somewhat demonstrates the importance of proper door control when opening doors and windows at a structure fire, but his ultimate goal is to scare training divisions into purchasing his prop using fancy words like ventilation induced flashover.
