Our eyesight is probably the best of our senses, but many birds possess far greater vision than we do. Humans and some other primates have a structure in the eye called a fovea which allows for precise central vision. Some species of raptor have more than one fovea allowing them to see high resolution at great distances. Many birds possess an additional cone (yellow) which means they can see colors we can’t even perceive or fathom. Lots of creatures can see UV or IR, including many insects. Our other senses are pretty shoddy compared to many animals. Dogs alone have us hands down on both smell and hearing. After a bit more thought I should also add that there are many more senses than the human five in the animal kingdom. Sharks and some other fish have an organ called the Ampullae of Lorenzini which are able to detect electrical currents in the water. Many birds and marine species (including some bacteria!) are able to sense magnetic currents. Fish have an organ called the “lateral line” which can sense things like movement and pressure gradients in water. Proprioception and thermoception are other senses we have, I think there’s at least like 12 that are commonly recognised

Yeah, humans have pretty good eyesight compared to many animals, but our other senses like hearing, taste, and touch are also well developed in their own ways. It’s all about how we use them in our daily lives. Before reading these comments, I would have assumed a vast many mammals have better eyesight but that we’re in the Miser Brothers 2024 No Climate Crisis Is Too Much Vote Wiser T-Shirt moreover I love this middle of the range by sheer number of species. But then I realized colour vision probably plays into that, and how many animals are hindered in that regard (tiger stripes as effective camouflage came to mind, as well as relative colourblindness in dogs etc). Humans are so cool. Brain development for higher thinking was definitely the driving force in our species success, but it seems the strength of our senses is special too.
