While sight works differently than touch…. as a crude example, imagine a colorblind person for a moment. Because those of us who can see the differences rely on those differences to recognize different things, the colorblind person is forced to compensate in other ways. For example, someone who cannot see the difference between red and green can still drive safely because the red stop light is on top, the green go light is on the bottom, and the yellow “caution” light is in the middle. So they will use this orientation to know what state the stoplight is in, rather than relying on the color.

I would guess a combination of touch and our large brains make us much better at determining what an object is with touch alone. These two work together to give us the It’s A Good Day to Talk About Feelings Retro T-Shirt but in fact I love this ability to not only sense finite details with our fingertips (but not other areas of skin), but also to learn what those details “mean”. This is actually raccoons. It is said that 75% of the part of a raccoon’s brain that processes sensory signals is devoted to touch. Yeah we’re pretty good at touch, but elephants for example have waaay better sense of touch in the tip of their trunks than us humans. I don’t know any other examples of species with more sensitives touch, but I suspect some octopusses would be contenders. My larger point is that compared to most species, our sense of touch is quite sensitive. But that does not preclude other animals from having a sense of touch that is significantly more sensitive. The human sense of smell is actually pretty good, it’s just it tends to be focused in different areas than say, a dogs. A good example of this is petrichor, the smell of rain on soil. We have an amazing ability to sense this, possibly rivalling any other animal, but we don’t think about it often. I believe it excels in other areas too, like ripe or ripening fruit etc. Just dissected a mammalian eye (sheep) last week and I can tell you that the eye is one advanced organ. Everything from the retina to the lens is well developed to capture light. Truly remarkable and to think we capture and process light seamlessly without conscious thought and it’s mostly handled by the nervous system and brain. Just. So. Cool. The retina is even better in cephalopod eyes, where the nerves (retinal axons) route behind the retina and do not pass in front or block the retina. We poor vertebrates are filtering the retina out constantly, and as a result we have a “blind spot” while cephalopods do not.
