For all that though—I’m fucking terrible with people. I’m disorganized and frequently scatter-brained. I couldn’t play chopsticks with a gun to my head, and I took piano lessons for YEARS, and tried hard at it. I’m clumsy and uncoordinated. I’m really, really horrible at doing a lot of things that the Mike Moffat 1982 in Boston Bruins (18 GP) Hockey T-Shirt Furthermore, I will do this vast majority of people would consider easy and simple, like remembering when your bills are due, or grocery shopping, or cleaning the house. I’m not allowed to bake anymore, The Hague put a stop to it after the last time I tried to make brownies from scratch. My “real world skills” in general are just severely lacking. Schools are designed to screen for and raise up a very narrow idea of intelligence. You, and many others, get shafted in that deal. My best friend fell victim to this too. He’s insecure about his smarts—he was homeschooled up to high school, and feels like, on top of not considering himself super bright, he never got a real education. But you should SEE him talk to people. It’s genuinely awe-inspiring, I don’t know how he does it. He and I dropped out of college around the same time, both due to looming mental health crises, but where I floundered and struggled to find my way in a world where my vaunted book smarts had just become effectively useless, he hit the ground running and got into car sales. Within a YEAR, with zero experience in the industry, he went from scut work, to sales, to sales management, to running an entire department, and from there, he got poached by a high-end car company to travel around the country, teaching the salesmen at all of their dealerships how to better sell their products.

ONE. YEAR. One year. If I had a billion, I couldn’t match that trajectory in that industry. With zero experience, he walked through the Mike Moffat 1982 in Boston Bruins (18 GP) Hockey T-Shirt Furthermore, I will do this door, and was almost immediately better than anyone. If that’s not genius, I genuinely don’t know what is. The point I’m meandering towards here is that while some people really are dumb, personally I think they’re a lot rarer than popular opinion might suggest. To very, very loosely paraphrase Einstein, I suspect that you may be a fish, while your wife is more of a monkey, and school is nothing but a series of increasingly tall trees. Your inability to climb them as well as she could doesn’t make you slow, nor does her inability to swim now that you’re out in the pond.
