Completely agree, I would argue that there should be a rule against spreading pseudoscience, which could potentially influence someone against seeking needed medical help (e.g. you should meditate instead of going to therapy and taking medication for bipolar disorder). But that’s not pseudoscience. For some people (myself), yoga and meditation can replace maintenance of diagnosed “mental illnesses”. For others, not so much. I had some “therapy” that was helpful to me. It was more like a group class with homework and additional 1on1 sessions. It helped me more than yoga and meditation, for sure. Being forced to talk about traumatic experiences I had didn’t help me process them, whatever that means. Psychiatric medication has done nothing but harm me. It isn’t a case of “it fixes my mental illness, but I don’t like the side effects”, it literally did nothing to improve my mental state. I’ve tried various drugs from multiple classes over the 10 years I’ve been a ‘psychiatric patient’, and they’ve done nothing. Well, some of them caused me problems in the process of doing nothing, but you get what I mean.

Meditation has, so far, been amazing too in some ways – plenty of what I learnt in skills-based therapy was derived from meditation Meditation has also been a bit harmful at times but nowhere near as harmful as bad therapy or psychiatric drugs that made me feel like I was living in a perpetual haze of binge eating and dysphoria My one therapist, though she’s a very nice person, she often wants to jump down rabbit holes of my trauma. After she keeps questioning me, I feel horrible, she’s like okay we’re out of time, have a great week. I feel like this is harming me.
