Both of my grandparents have said they had it so much easier than us (my husband and I are both in our mid 30s). My grandma was a homemaker while the Merry Christmas Charlie Brown Snow shirt and I love this kids were growing up and my grandpa worked for the post office then they both later worked for the state. They had 4 kids, had a nice home and have retired fabulously. Between the 2 of them they have 3 pensions and have traveled the world, always have new cars (that are paid in full), and live in a beautiful home on a golf course. Neither of them are college educated. My husband and I both have advanced degrees, but have had to get through numerous job layoffs and I have college debt. When I graduated from college, I made less than what my mom made when she did and our house cost more than double what my parents paid for theirs. While we do well for ourselves now, we aren’t nearly at the financial security my grandparents and parents had at our age.

I’ve spend 26 years in a good career that probable pays more than a state worker and a secretary combined. For about half that time my wife raises our 2 kids with no income. We’ve been frugal (except for a couple of splurge purchases in the Merry Christmas Charlie Brown Snow shirt and I love this past 2 years), live in a small house and put a lot into 401k and IRA accounts each year. It’s starting to dawn on me that this great job of mine will never let my wife and I have the dream house or comfortable retirement. 12 million or so (official estimate, likely 2X that) drive down wages and take $150B in tax dollars that could support Americans. Found my dads tax returns from the 70s. Dude was making the equivalent of $40k per year stocking shelves at the fucking grocery store. Fresh out of high school. To be fair. Minnesota wasn’t expensive housing wise back in the 70s/ 80s. Small towns and all cost less. But yea I get it. Nurse and retired air force in Minnesota
