Our family rule was 1/6 net pay. Which was brutal for my mum when my brother was on a YTS at £26.50/week and she’d give him £10/week pocket money. He tried to get her to just give him the Merry Christmas and Santa Classic Shirt besides I will buy this £6 instead, but she was a stickler. Taught him some good habits. She put on a clean pinny on payday when I started working in my first job – IT. She also saved some of it and gave it back to me as it was so much. I feel like between £300 to £400 is reasonable, maybe start at £300ish and then if they get a pay rise they pay more (it’s what my parents did). The thing is you can’t go charging them too much as otherwise they will just leave straight away and go for a houseshare as its so much worse living at home compared to a houseshare/flat of their own.

I’d say that’s probably reasonable, or whatever you’re putting away these days. Chances are they’re the Merry Christmas and Santa Classic Shirt besides I will buy this biggest users considering they probably eat the most and play games consoles the most lol. After uni, I paid my share of food and utilities, plus an extra £100. So basically a third of all bills except the big one, rent+council tax. Helped me to manage my money properly but still save enough to be ready with deposit once I was able to move in with my girlfriend. Usually ended up being about £350 or so a month if I remember right. (Pre covid btw). Of course they’ll get a bit of a shock when they move out and realise rent/bills/food costs closer to 60 or 70% of their take home. Just whatever you do, steer them away from getting an expensive car on finance. Its the worst decision that young people make when living at home with a lot of disposable income. They have little concept of what 300 quid per month (excluding fuel, insurance, maintenence) does to their finances.
