Yeah I’m with the Matt Poitras The Ice Hockey Tour shirt But I will love this consensus, 150-300 is right imo. They’ll be very happy with the lump sum when they move out haha. It’s a very important skill learning to budget, you’ll definitely be doing them a favour. Even 300 from 1500 is nothing. If they move out alone then it’ll easy be 1000-1200 p/month rent and bills (I’m in the north). With a friend/partner that’ll be halved, which is more than they were paying at home but not a complete shock to the system realising they have no disposable income. I got charged nothing as I was still young, moved out at 21 and nearly 10 years later have 150k equity and a (relatively) low mortgage for my age and compared to others my age. My brothers (33, 38) have not moved out yet, both were given the money my mum had saved for them from charging them (and lodgers) rent over the years (10s of thousands, one of them got about 40k from it). Luckily I don’t have to think about what I will charge my 1 year old, because I feel like, as she’s a girl (an adorable little girl), I don’t really want to ever charge or bill her anything. If she was a boy I would feel completely different – odd.

If I was going to do something I think I’d say 20-25% of your take-home for keep, then put that in a savings account and not give it over one day unless it’s for a house, education etc I just took ownership of one of the Matt Poitras The Ice Hockey Tour shirt But I will love this bills. Think it was internet? I didn’t mind doing this and appreciated the honesty of seeing how much something actually cost. Felt like I was contributing to the household too and learnt how bills work, rather than feeling like my parents were just taking money from me. Same. I came from a single parent upbringing where there was not a lot to go around, so my inclination is to give them everything I didn’t, but a major thing I didn’t get was sound financial advice, so that’s the balance I want to strike 🙂 Do they understand savings and stuff? Whatever they would be paying in rent has to go into savings or investments etc but they need to choose it and understand it. Fair enough to charge for food and split heating etc.
