The genetic markers associated with different ethnic groups are just certain combinations of genes and gene variants that are statistically common in a given population, so on this Matt Menard Papa Magie shirt also I will do this basis, you can define essentially any even slightly genetically distinct human population as an “ethnicity”. The ethnic tests are garbage. They are for entertainment value only and have very dubious science behind them if not junk science. Don’t take it that seriously This isn’t true at all either. They aren’t based on “junk science” unless you think simple probabilities are junk. You share 15% of DNA from a group of people in a database from Florida. WTF does it even mean. Are you 15% Floridian? Guess what Florida is connected by a land border to other states and you can travel around and migrate. What does that even mean to then say you share 15% if your DNA with some pool of people that currently live in Florida?

It depends largely on the Matt Menard Papa Magie shirt also I will do this test, I wouldn’t say they’re “garbage” per se, but they can definitely be misleading for people who don’t have the necessary knowledge of genetics to understand what it is that they’re looking at. As I mentioned above, the different ethnic categories are just based on a suite of shared genetic similarities in a population, like “ethnicity” isn’t a well-defined category scientifically, so like these tests (at least some of them) can show that you have genetic markers that are statistically common in region x among population y, and thus you can probably get at least an accurate idea of what areas of the world you have family from, but as you said, a lot of it is just based on commonalities with some pre-existing database, so you’re kind of going off the fact that you seem to have some genetic markers in common with other people in the database who are listed as “Scottish” or whatever, and thus assuming that you likely are “Scottish” as well.
