So when a centrist comes along and says, “Well they make some good points…” the Master of Metal Shirt and I love this only thing they are doing is smearing a coat of banality over the evil that is hiding behind those “good points.” It’s usually because anyone who identifies as centrist or moderate tends to be a republican in disguise. May not always be the case, but it seems to be that way more often than not. Centrism isn’t a political position. Most people I’ve seen describe themselves as centrist are either “both sides suck so I refuse to participate” or they don’t entirely line up with one side or the other 100%. I’ve seen people who self describe as centrists that when you actually get talking to them about how they feel about various topics will have a clear left or right bias but they don’t acknowledge it because they don’t agree with other parts of that ideology (most people aren’t 100% ideologically consistent anyway), or they don’t want to be perceived as someone with left or (more usually) right leaning opinions.

“Should gay people be allowed to marry someone of the Master of Metal Shirt and I love this same gender?” Is a question with no real “centrist” answer. Same with trans rights, or questions around racial and economic equity and justice. An argument I’ve seen against centrism is that it gives permission to both sides to do their worst as long as the centrist gets what they want. The classic example (from a leftist viewpoint) is the centrist is okay with the right calling for the extermination of trans people as long as they get lower taxes. It’s not being near the center that is looked down upon. Most people fall there. It’s people who claim to be centrists while clearly favoring one party over the other. They take refuge in centrism thinking people will take them more seriously when they say things like “Biden is corrupt too. I mean both parties suck.” Centrism, just like libertarianism, gets used a lot as a mask for regular conservatives trying to avoid the stigma of being conservative. Actual centrists are often fine. Just too many people who claim to be centrists as a “see I’m not a lame conservative now you have to take me seriously” kinda thing, and then they tell you their views and its the usual hateful shit internet conservatives spew.
