Where I work, I left an hour “early” if that makes sense. I start my shift at 1:30am and end at 10:00am, so I left at 9:00am. I still get my 8 hours. We don’t get paid for it. Instead of working 10-7, I was scheduled 10-6 and was given the option to work the extra hour. No one on my shift did. I worked from 10pm to 8am and whenever the clocks went back we got paid an hour of OT because even though the clock changes, the system still recognized that we worked 11 hours instead of 10. If the clocks turn back you get paid for 9 hours. If the clock turns forward and you work only 7 hours you still get paid for 8. In Scotland working in the Licensed Trade at least, business hours follow the times that you start. So if you work from 7pm-3am, you would finish at 2am because its technically 3am. Maybe this has to do with the alcohol license and so only applies to bars and clubs etc. But I would be surprised if that was the case.

My wife used to work night shifts, she hated because, as others have stated, you just work an extra hour for free. When you cross a time zone during the day or night, they time is always shifted at night and each watch moves the ships clocks 20 minutes. I was salaried so I worked the extra hour. Based on our schedule, the same shift would be the one that gets to work the night when the clock jumps forwards, so it would even out eventually. Doctors already work extra hours (80-100 hrs/wk) without getting compensated for it, what does one extra hour matter. At my job those people work 9 hours and get an hour of overtime, or if there is enough overlap with the day shift, they can work 8 hours and go home an hour “early” I used to work the graveyard at McDonald’s. You watch it change, be sad about it, work the extra hour and get paid for it and hope you get overtime because whoever scheduled you didn’t account for the extra hour you worked lol If your kitchen forgets it was gonna happen and you’re the first to realize the time shift happened, you also get to die a bit inside! And then you get to tell the rest of your crew and watch them also die a bit inside. We did get paid for it though, our time punch software even specifically pointed out when an employee was clocked in during a time change.
