A couple hundred years ago when the US forced Japan to open its borders and even before when contact was rare, we didn’t really care what Japanese people called their country. So a name was invented for whatever reason generally long before close contact was made with the people and that would just stick indefinitely. Of course, it doesn’t help when China’s actual country name is very difficult to pronounce for English speakers, but it’s not like we couldn’t pronounce “Nikon”. And as others have mentioned trying to say endonyms in a different language is very difficult. English does not have the right sounds to pronounce Zhōngguó instead of China normally, for example. Languages have specific rules of how they work that make some endonyms harder than others. Plus, if a speaker of one language refers to another country with an exonym, then that’s only going to be in their native language. The moment they speak the language of the other country, they will use that country’s endonym. Because they’re using their own language with each other, not with people from the other country. So using the endonym doesn’t make any difference.

Sure you might butcher names you don’t have sounds for, but that’s where accents come in, it doesnt’ mean you should just completely change it from Deutschland to Germany For example Egypt is actually called “Misr” by the Egyptians and the word “Egypt” is originated from the Greeks calling it “Aigyptos” after a legendary Egyptian king because the Greek sources spread through Europe easier and Romans who actually conquered the place kept calling it Egypt.
