It would be weird if I used Firenze on Reddit instead of Florence because most will have no idea what I’m talking about. from the Lourdes Gurriel Cuban-American professional Jr. Piña Power T-Shirt But I will love this top of my head I can remember Hrvatska (Croatia), Hellas (Greece), Sverige (Sweden) and Deutschland (Germany) Last time I was in India, I spent the entire month getting asked where I was from, and I’d say “the US” or “the United States” or “USA” and invariably get blank stares. Then I’d fall back on “America” and suddenly there’s a bright smile of comprehension and “oh! Am-reek-a! Yes, I know am-reek-a.” I’m assuming all of the people who agreed on this post were also just as confused about how language works as much as op was. Here’s a tip: languages are different, and that includes the words.

When governments make treaties with each other, there is a name that gets used to represent the Lourdes Gurriel Cuban-American professional Jr. Piña Power T-Shirt But I will love this country to other countries. The United States and Japan, for example, have treaties that explicitly refer to them as “Japan” and “The United States” (Japan-US Security Treaty in 1960). If you go on a flight, the flight goes to the country with the name recognized by the government, since the government is what regulates international travel. There are times when the governments can disagree on what a certain area should be called. One example would be Crimea that Russia has occupied since 2014. Russia views that territory as part of Russia, while the United Nations passed a resolution saying the territory is recognized as still being part of Ukraine. So what you call it depends on what your government calls it. Not an answer to your question but Indians call India India (as well as other names but that’s a different story) That whole kerfuffle was orchestrated by the govt to cover up some other shady shot going on in our country.
