The number of posts that only refer to the game they’re even talking about by abbreviations, or just assume you know the game they’re talking about in general, is insane. How would I know what to look up if I don’t even know what the domain is? Other subreddits require you to name the thing you’re talking about in brackets in the title. I think r/gaming would be dramatically better for it. Yeah I always feel like it’s a purposeful kind of gatekeeping. Don’t already know what we’re talking about? Then you don’t belong here. It’s to weed out new people.

I mean…. it is a relatively straight-forward path going from “I don’t know” to “I understand”. You learn. You ask “what does this mean?”, and you search online with Google for the acronyms in question. When all it generally takes is “I don’t understand. Can you explain that to me?” to get past the gatekeeper, it isn’t much of a gate. You could always study up on the game in question, to learn the lingo and proper abbreviations, if you want to participate. Yes but how are we going to know what game to study up on with a generic acronym? This is literally the issue lmao. If someone is talking about DS, is that Dark Souls? Dead Space? Don’t Starve? Darksiders? It’s really not hard to use abbreviations correctly and state what it stands for first. You trying to justify it is hilariously silly If you don’t even know what game is being talked about in the conversation, why do you want to participate in that conversation as if you ALWAYS knew what the topic was about? When you hear someone speaking Spanish, or a language you don’t understand, do you demand they switch to using language you *do* understand, so you can then decide if you want to participate? Gamers using acronyms you don’t know, is just like hearing another language.
