Cold water immersion has killed many people instantly, due to cold blood shocking the brain too fast. It’s usually seniors or people with underlying health issues that die instantly from it. Regardless, there is that risk. This is why most ice swimmers train gradually, and why they enter the water slowly, rather than super fast. For example I’d first just let my body adjust to the cold winter air, then submerge my feet, then slowly go in until I was completely submerged. The reason I stopped, is because I also got into hydrotherapy on the other end – extreme heat. It seemed that daily ice swims raised my tolerance for heat, so much that I was able to stay in the steam room for many hours when most people couldn’t even tolerate 15 minutes. It was so extreme that many people told me I should try out for a world record, but when I did, even they said it was too dangerous.

All I know is back then, I got so used to it that it seemed healthy. But how addictive it became didn’t seem healthy. And in recent years, I’ve only tried it twice, and each time I came down with a virus right after. I think likely because it over taxes the body and can lower the immune system, but the thing is, many say if you do it on a regular basis it’ll boost your immune system.
