Giant ground sloths and glyptodons (basically mega-armadillos) have been suggested as possible seed dispersers. Gimme a minute to check. EDIT- looks like gomphothere and toxodons have also been suggested. Also jaguars will sometimes eat them, but not frequently enough to be considered a primary disperser. I have baby cherry trees sprouting all over under mine. The squirrels are kind enough to spread them around my backyard I have a cherry tree in my front yard. Generally, plants that don’t grow well directly next to their parent have some way of getting the seeds to move further away (blown in the wind, stick to animal fur, etc.). Fruit is supposed to be eaten, the seed passed through the digestive system, and deposited somewhere else after the animal has moved away. The vast majority of trees do not have hundreds of seedlings popping up all under them and taking over. Cherry trees are totally normal. I have grown cherry, wild cherry, 4 different pears, 5 different apples, an apricot, plums, grapes, peaches, and persimmon. None of them have ever had any competition from fallen seeds or pits.

The only one that had that problem was a wild plum. I’m really not an expert on this, but it’s essentially that large trees dominate resources: water, nutrients, and sunlight. The reason fruits exist is so that animals will eat the seeds and poop them out somewhere away from the immediate area- also with some fertilizer thrown in. Smaller plants do not dominate resources even remotely on the scale a tree does, so it’s more advantageous to have a cluster of the same species in one area. What experience do you have with cherries to say they dont sprout near their parent? Ive got a cherry tree in my yard that has sprouts try to grow somewhat near the parent tree. A year or two ago when i cleaned up the yard I cut down about 5 or 6 small cherries under or near the big tree which were about 2″ diameter.
