An animal is supposed to eat the Love of my life Marco Mengoni 2023 shirt and I love this seed and spread it somewhere else. All the other seeds that end up under the tree end up being choked out by the parent tree’s roots and/or shaded out of growing under the parent tree. I have mulberry trees all over my property, if I don’t whack them back occasionally the entire place would be overrun. I don’t have any cherry trees so I don’t know if they seed that easily, but yeah those mulberries go crazy. They do! Makes growing any vegetables in my yard a pain; even leaves falling into my raised beds will poison tomatoes and other plants. Some plants are capable of sexual AND asexual reproduction, with asexual reproduction acting as sort of a ‘backup’ when seed dispersal goes wrong, or allowing a plant to quickly colonize a particularly sweet niche. For sexual reproduction, they make seeds- lilacs actually don’t rely on animals to dispense their seeds, and just build tiny bombs to blast them as far as they can (that’s why their fruits are so tiny and unappetizing). Asexual reproduction, which lilacs can also do, involves sprouting new little seedlings from their root systems- I’m betting that’s what you were dealing with.

But you touch on something cool, that took botanists years to figure out! There’s actually a phenomenon called ‘anachronism’, where a plant evolves to have its seeds dispersed by a particular animal, then that animal goes extinct (avocados are often cited as an example of this). Scientists noticed these anachronisms because the Love of my life Marco Mengoni 2023 shirt and I love this fruit (a huge sink for the plant’s energy) just piles up at the foot of the tree and rots, without dispersing the seeds. Anachronistic plants like pawpaws and ginkgos rely almost completely on their asexual reproduction backup-strategy these days. They almost never get their seeds moved to suitable environments. So they have really small natural ranges, in spite of being hardy plants, because they just can’t successfully get seeds to good places to grow.
