It’s so hard to find other remote IT professionals since every foreigner I meet here seems to teach English. Nice to see you are doing well! Yeah, remote for US job in Korea is the dream setup. Coming from a Korean company and going back to US based is a night and day difference in multiple aspects (all good) Question. How is the pay working for an American company while located in Korea? Is it adjusted for local cost of living? Asking because I also work remotely (past 4 years) at various tech companies (I’m actually in HR Comp). I’m in NYC and if I were to move to another state, they wouldn’t lower my salary but I may be “capped” out in the new state based on geography- so my raises would be very low or non existent. I guess I’m wondering how it’d be making NYC salary in a cheaper country like Korea where salaries are much lower on average. Thanks!

I’ve had job offers from US companies where they tried to low ball since I was based here. The worst offender was Gitlab. They literally halved the salary for the position, was a hard pass from me. Companies like AWS and Google do similar but not as steep. Others can pay double what korean companies pay if they don’t factor in COLA as much, or not at all. The main issue you’d run into is visa. In order to work here you’d need to work for a Korean company in which case you’ll be making much less, unless you’re here on a marriage visa (my case) As per everyone, sorry for the perhaps intrusive question but this is quite an interesting situation! How does the whole visa / work permit thing work with being contracted to a US company and working remotely in Korea? Is it a digital nomad sort of visa? I was under the impression one would have to be sponsored by a Korea-based company to have a regular work permit. (I also assumed that since you’ve been there for 4 years it was unlikely to be a permanent residence permit) Do you for for an American company as a Korean employee (ie they have Korean offices) or for a US company as a US employee?
