Sad to hear he died from a stress related heart attack. Hindsight is 20/20 but I’m a lazy person myself and wouldn’t have committed myself as much as he did to my job. What are they gonna do if I willfully knock off on time? Fire the last person doing the job? I worked at a Texas Roadhouse between a Red Lobster and an O Charlie’s restaurant in 2001. Had been in restaurant work for a while at that point and felt married to it. That’s pretty much gonna be the future for us all. I’m mid 30s and i’m not dreaming of a retirement tho i am making some plans, we’ll see how it goes.

I always figured a skill like weaving or tailoring would be a useful skill when society collapses and we’re back to bartering with local tribes and communes. I’m a pretty decent builder with only handtools, and can do my math with pen and paper, a skill I will pass to my children so they might prosper when society colapses. Personally I’d prefer giant meteor. Much more likely to kill me before i knew what had happened. Yellowstone would take weeks or months to do the job. I am sorry. How disheartening to see people who have dedicated themselves to their work not being able to reap the rewards they deserve. Capitalist society sucks sometimes. Especially at midnight, that’s when our shifts overlap. Edit: Used to overlap* I’m just waiting to see his headlights come down the road, but they won’t. Shit I’m sorry for your loss and angry at the problem it highlights. I had a coworker who died of a heart attack in his 50s. He was working in a warehouse despite having a serious heart condition. A combination of a person who’d been raised to think that your were obliged to work hard for other people without question and a company that was happy to let him work himself to death if that’s what he “wanted”. My step dad got cancer and got too sick to work. When his FMLA time was up, they fired him over the phone after previously saying they would keep him on. He died just shy of turning 65 and retiring. Had the boat and everything ready. Worked his ass off all those years for the company to say fuck you.
