I know that if you owe tax for example then the nearest family member on PAYE can get their wages highjacked and there’s nothing they can do about it. But it sounds like they are threatening them with powers they don’t have. Payday loans maybe?

But these bailiffs sound like cowboys acting on behalf of more cowboys. They are not legally allowed to take essentials – bed, cookware, other items that are on a list you can find online. Probably not children’s things, but check the list. This is where it gets debatable. If a family has two tables can the bailiffs take one? If the kid has an iPad, is it a luxury belonging to the parents that can be taken? If the debtor has a car that they need to get to work, can the bailiffs take it and say the debtor is able to take public transport to work and therefore the car is a luxury? In OP’s case if the debtor is a professional photographer the camera equipment is a tool of their trade. Harder to argue for the MacBook – at its core it doesn’t do much that a cheaper laptop can’t do (but you could say the same about the camera equipment).
