I commute from Didcot to North London – today it took me 3 hours to get home. Luckily my relationship has broken down and I’m moving back to London in 3 weeks. Old boss of mine who was very senior travelled in from just below Leeds 3 says a week. His annual train ticket was over 10,000 a year. Company helps all employees with a 75% discount on that though but still a huge hit. To avoid travel cost, I’d also come back on super off peak. Safe to say I didn’t sleep much and worked constantly. In my last role I had a 2hrs door to door commute from West London to just outside Brighton, via Clapham Junction where timings meant a 20min or so wait. Return trains were constantly getting cancelled and I dreaded finding myself stranded. Journey wasn’t too bad, usually had lots of space and a table, but 7am-7pm each day became draining after a while (was typically in office 3-5 days). Now have a 1hr commute just to get to Paddington I knew someone who commuted daily from Banbury Oxfordshire to Vauxhall in Lambeth. Horrendous and expensive. She actually took on a second weekend retail job evenings/weekends to find enough money to pay for commuting. Madness. Sat down with her and went through the numbers and also talked though the fact it was making her ill. She gave up the London job!

One of my UCL professors back in 2018/19 travelled to London from Portugal once a week to give us our weekly course lectures. Full time? Or part time commutes? I’ve known people who did part time commutes from Northern Ireland and Paris. Used to do Newcastle to Kings Cross and back 3 times a week. Fucking awful. 7:00 Flying Scotsman out, 6:00 pm train back. And they wonder why I quit. Had a girl I knew from near Birmingham come to London. Door to door is around 2hr 50min 1 way and I absolutely dread it. The office was based in Shoreditch. I literally couldn’t do that. It’s 6 hours on trains daily. He said he sleeps on train just fine. Currently a 45min door to door commute (if the Hammersmith line is running) so not horrendous. Will be moving to norwich next year to move in with my partner, my new job is remote but I want to come into the office so I’m dreading the commute to Southwark! Barcelona. My colleague told me he commuted every Monday morning from Barcelona to London and back on Fridays for a year. His wife and kids were still there and not happy to move back to London yet.
