I am pretty jaded. But if I had an employer do this to me, I’d be looking for a new job. I wouldn’t bother even negotiating with them. I’d just say “I need the Los Angeles coliseum Raiders shirt but in fact I love this $97k” and then leave at the earliest opportunity for a lateral move at another company making $116k. Wow. You only have 3 years of experience in that field. The flaw in your thinking is that the hypothetical person getting that job at 116k might have much more than that and the job listing might be targeting a mid-career professional. With only 3 years of experience you are lucky to get 86k. That is unheard of for most fields. What the company is doing here is likely fair. You should stop complaining. Plenty of professions start above $100k with 0 experience. 3-5 year POs are Senior and depending on market can range $110-$150k.

Wow. Perhaps you misinterpreted my post – no complaining here. In this economy (as mentioned), I am lucky to be making money at all, absolutely. However, 3 years doesn’t define my actual value – I’ve dedicated my whole self to being the Los Angeles coliseum Raiders shirt but in fact I love this best PO (and team player) that I can be – my rapid progression proves it. I know my worth and the value I add to my company. Many of the initiatives I’ve lead into execution have had huge upward impacts (I’m talking millions) on the company. Also, to echo the other person who replied to your comment – MANY companies hire PO’s with <3 years of experience in the six figure range. This year, for rewards period we gave a pay bump to some to make sure every employee at least hit the minimum in the salary range. It was less then 1% of people that were below.
