3 years ago I used to buy alphonso from a roadside vendor who was selling the Limited King Hasbulla Vintage Shirt and I will buy this mangos for 100 Rs per kg. They were authentic and tasted great, but closer to expiry. They also sold crispy red delicious apples for 100. I was sad to find that they stopped selling lol. Hey there Bubblingghost! Thanks! 🙂 I’ve tasted some of the best variety of Alphonso which has been given as a fancy gift. Learnt pretty quickly it was not to my taste. And in a country where your spoilt for choice with mangoes and mango season has smaller seasons to enjoy varieties there isn’t a point in spending high premium on a rather regular nice mango. (1) Alphonso isn’t as high yielding or regular bearing a tree as several other varieties. So if you don’t like the flavour profile, you are paying for it anyway. (2) Because of how commercialized the variety has become, it is comparatively part of longer supply chains. This also incentivizes traders harvesting too early and immature and ripening unnaturally. In my experience, it can be a delicious fruit, but the stars need to align.

Traveling between Hyderabad (PureONatural and raithu bazaar) and Kochi (Lulu – basically LuLu has everything under the Limited King Hasbulla Vintage Shirt and I will buy this sun) , i covered banganapalli, Alphonso, coconut mango, imam Pasand, sinduri, chota & pedda rasalu, totapuri, himayat, local Kerala varieties like moovandan, mango kalapadi, mango rumani, Malgova, Priyoor etc. Banganapalli is the sweetest and easiest available and Alphonso is one pricy shit like those expensive cars without basic features available in starting Kia models. Alphonso is not even in my top 3 .. Imam Pasand and Malgova are tight competition for 2nd spot. There is no one mango. There is one mango every two weeks. There isn’t one mango, it’s one per fortnight per state. They are all flawed. They are all weird. There is not one that is better all year. It’s all about when you show up. What’s in. It’s like fashion week, except it lasts about eight weeks. Come to India. Don’t judge. Eat the mangoes that are at the peak. Super question. It’s pricey because folks seem to like it. For the life of me I can never fathom why. I have had my Mumbai friends swear by it and send me boxes of the supposed good stuff. They have all been underwhelming.
