When I went to Amsterdam a mugger tried to steal cash off me and my friends with a knife. He got 18 months after we ID’d him from a tattoo he deliberately showed us. (Moron) I felt so betrayed because we did everything right, didn’t stay out too late, didn’t get drunk, stayed in a group of 5 lads and it all didn’t matter. First of all; it got torn to shreds in the war and in its rebuild was used as a ‘guinea pig’ for brutalist 60s architecture. Secondly; it’s just in a strange location in the country – it’s neither north nor south, nor is it usually the useful middle point if you’re going elsewhere. Also it’s on the west side; a lot of British people don’t realise this, but the west side is the less connected side of the country. I lived in Birmingham and agree it’s awful. I’ve lived in a lot of cities, UK and abroad and it’s the one I couldn’t wait to get out of quick enough. When I used to drive back from Devon to Brum I reached spaghetti junction and saw the skyscrapers rise up, my heart sank. Ugly concrete mess with very few redeeming factors. Everyone knows what’s wrong with Birmingham. I can’t state it here because this is Reddit and speech crime is not allowed. “It was bombed during ww2” is the greatest reach I’ve seen yet. Had some genuine belly laughs at that. You won’t find any genuine answers here.

Birmingham is crap because its crap. It’s always been crap to varying degrees, Birmingham used to literally be a synonym for crap! ie Brummagem wares It hasn’t gone downhill, in fact in recent years it is actually on the Lana Del Rey’s Waffle House Always Serving T-Shirt moreover I will buy this up. Put it this way – Birmingham-Wolverhampton is the Nordrhein-Westfalen of the UK. I’ve lived in 5 cities in the UK and travelled almost the whole country. I’ve even been to Solihull. But never have I had any reason to visit two places: Leeds, and Birmingham city centre. Leeds is on my list though as it has the Royal Armouries. I know there is that UK thing of calling a place a shit hole for giggles but in all honesty. Birmingham is the only city I have visited where I have decided to cut my trip short as the city fucking sucks. Its a dirty, nasty place that’s given up and died. My memory of Birmingham city centre is it’s not bad but there are a lot of nearby car parks and everyone there drives. I know they’ve been putting in a lot of anti-car measures so it could be that because they’ve made it difficult to drive, people are choosing not to go to the centre? Birmingham is a bit ‘American’ in the way everyone drives everywhere!
