Birmingham was a hugely industrial city. My dad used to work in a factory that made car parts and tools for Rolls Royce and lost his job when it closed in the mid 70s. The Mailbox stands about where that factory used to be. So, it’s a mixture of poor architecture choices in the 60s followed by mismatched gentrification following the closure of factories in the 70s to the 90s, and any old (typically Victorian) architecture that survived all of that.

If you live a similar distance as Wolves to B’rum in Manchester. You go to Manchester. Just because that’s where everything is. The transport links are also better, further driving growth in the centre. The Birmingham of today is far better than in the past. (1970’s to 1990’s) In the past, there was a lot more concrete, subways, ramps and cars which ruled Birmingham over pedestrians.
