Am Canadian, saw ZZ top play when I was in high school years ago and I said to a friend “I don’t know who these zed zed top guys are but they’re great!” And some older biker dude grabbed me by the Knowing is half the battle the other half is violence political T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this shirt and yelled “it’s fucking zee zee top, get it right!”. Fun fact, “Zizi” is a (childish) word for penis in French, which gives “Zizi Top” a funny ring to it. It’s like if they were called “Top Peepee” in English. Yeah, I think the guys who wrote Pearl Necklace would love that. They’re basically Beavis and Butthead with beards and guitars I didn’t realize until I was a full adult that the head of the Men in Black did not get to keep his name, but instead the American organization decided to use a notably non-american pronunciation

Oh. My. God. I wondered every single time I heard that why it sounded like they were saying ze-ed at the Knowing is half the battle the other half is violence political T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this end and thought it was a mispronunciation. My mind is blown. As an English kid, having never heard it said aloud, I tried to start a conversation about the band “Zed Zed Top”. While we are on the topic of pronouncing letter names, let’s fuck the whole “double-U” thing off and name it something like “wu”. Mexican-Spanish says “double U” as well where as Spain-Spanish I’ve heard “double V”, which actually makes most sense lol Is that right? Interesting, when I took Spanish in school, I was taught Mexican Spanish, and was told that W was “double V.” Then again, I live in the US, so I know to take whatever foreign language education I’ve received with a grain of salt… W isn’t “native” to Spanish. It’s only found in loan words from other languages. That’s probably why it’s pronounced like that. When I was younger than ten, I listened to a Canadian band. They had a kids album that my uncle got for me, and in one of their songs, they mention ZZ Top. They pronounced it “zed” and I thought that was just the name of the band.
