Personally, the King gizzard and the lizard wizard simply design T-Shirt Also,I will get this way I plan trips like this is just to draw a straight line on a map and then find the most direct way by locating the actual roads that you would be taking. Then I pick the places close to that route that I’m most interested in seeing, even if I have to leave that route for half a day or so. There are a lot of places that you can see but most aren’t really that interesting. No one is going to plan a trip around Wall Drug. I passed by it on two trips before finally stopping the 3rd time. Mt. Rushmore might be worth stopping but it’s not something to plan a trip around. The Badlands are more interesting (to me) than Mt. Rushmore. Yellowstone is worth planning a trip around. Maybe since you are from the NE, the southern route is of interest to you (number 2). I grew up in NC (and now live in the PNW) so route 1 was more interesting to me. I’ve lived in Arizona however so the tail end of number 2 I do find interesting. If you haven’t been in desert country, it’s quite unique.

So, it’s more a matter of picking out a few places that you are really interested in and planning a route with that in mind and anything else you see is just a bonus. It is interesting in broad terms, to see the population densities decrease and the vistas get larger and the weather change from humid to not humid. Half the US population is in the eastern third of the country (Mississippi eastward). Most of the rest is along a narrow strip on the West Coast. It’s humid in the east and arid in the west. You’re really talking about Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, desert and then Southern California. The rest is just a long drive.:) That’s actually the sites I would plan around if I were you. Vegas, hoover dam, grand canyon, monument valley (forest Gump scene), 4 corners, Mesa cliff dwellings, telluride, moab (arches national park) , hanging lake colorado (reservations required butworth it) , vail/Breckenridge, rocky mountain National Park, Jackson hole, grand Tetons, Yellowstone, devils tower, rapid city (mount Rushmore, crazy horse, custard state park)…. then continue on your route
