There was also a huge angle to this damn war. Ex. Field grade officers, even some GS 17’s and above (>20 years service from all branches) were flown in from all over the Kinda Busy Being A Dog Mom Sunflower Leopard shirt What’s more,I will buy this world. They resided in an old French Rubber Plantation in DaNang for just over 30 days. They smoked Cuban, drank Jack and ate gourmet. Some laboratory tests would be “adjusted” and voila— retirement in a combat zone with < 50% disability that entitled them to a similarly rated, tax free retirement pension. Racket… These corpses were piled up and ready for a big hole dug by army excavator. It happened after a campaign's aftermath.. NVA wore mostly with rubber sandals during attacks. Some would lose it during battles. Some wouldn't care just proceeding with their bare feet. I used to cross jungles with these rubber sandals during Cambodia conflicts and there were more than once I crawled in and out Khmer Rouge' strongholds in Thailand with..only one pair of socks or bare feet. ( 479th Front, NVA)VPA late 70s ) I used to work in a pub right next door to an abattoir. On a hot summers day, the smell of all of the dead carcasses would drift into the pub (which would usually cause it to empty of customers in minutes.) It was a really, unwholesome smell and those carcasses weren't even rotting, so I can't imagine the smell of corpses in a tropical climate.

Yup, they were what we call “regular army” unit and had better training and equipment than “local army” unit and “guerrilla”. Can’t upvote this enough. This is not something someone can understand until they are there. I salute you, brother. Question: for this picture, or for any war for that matter with a similar scene….who cleans up or claims the bodies? Are they left there to rot or do families come and claim the bodies I will never understand how these people can walk through a jungle barefoot, or engage in battle barefoot.Humans are a warrior tribe. They love war. They’ve been doing it since day one and will be having war until the end of time. It’s in our DNA. Even housewives at COSTCO will actually fight over the last pack of toilet paper then go home and make a pie for the church bazaar. It’s what we are. Warriors. In almost 5, 640 years in recorded human history, there have been 14, 430 recorded wars with 2 wars averaging per year. All those wars were aimed to create peace. Despite all the celebrations of Valentines Day, Christmases, Ramadans, Olympics, human beings will always love to kill each other in the name of peace. You hit the nail on the head, the smell. I’m glad I never had to deal with jungle warfare, Afghanistan was crazy, but at least I wasn’t in a hot and steamy jungle.
