Japanese-Americans and Korean-Americans have very different cultural norms, yet Asian-Americans in general have shared cultural traits that are different from European-American traits. I think there are cultural traits for Americans of European heritage that are substantively different from Americans of African, Latin American, or Asian descent and I don’t see why that has to be considered racist. I can certainly see why some expressions of that could be racist. But I don’t see why it is inherently racist because there are cultural traits shared at a level above their individual sub-cultures. If you look at culture from a food, religion, language & in group perspective “white” from an American context really only has a common in group. A weird by product is to a significant extent the culture of the original “white” colonists was kind of lost or subsumed into a broader American culture.

Technically Romans had a concept of “white” in ancient times but it didn’t extend to the northern, very light-haired and pale-skinned people who would today be considered the purist form of “white”. Being too white meant you were probably some kind of barbarian. Yeah in group dynamics are wild. The Greeks considered anyone who wasn’t Greek to be a barbarian, Romans included. There was also no “racial” category of who could and couldn’t be a slave in most of the ancient world. And this is actually what people are talking about when they say white culture doesn’t exist in the US. American culture as a whole is a hodgepodge of other cultures, many of which are not European. Like, the cultural markers are either white but not uniquely American or they are American but not uniquely white.
