If we use these insights to positively influence our being, and those around us, why wouldn’t we implement them? At least it has for me personally. I think the confusion comes from not understanding the two types of meditation, shamatha and vipassana. Beginners are often taught ‘Mindfulness’ is meditation. But mindfulness is something that can be cultivated (shamatha) and applied (vipassana) so it leads to confusion because these are two very different things. If you’re focusing on your breath (shamatha) you’re cultivating your ability to be relaxed and focused on an object. You should not be analyzing a thought or emotion that arrises. Now, once you’re proficient in shamatha, you can purposely shift your mind to anything you want to explore. You can then apply your mindfulness which is vipassana.

Or, can you still achieve the same results purely through shamatha? They are meant to be used together but are doing different things. Shamatha is like setting up your lab (still, uncontaminated) and vipassana is like the experiments i.e. what do you want to learn. You can go a long way with shamatha alone but to understand yourself and reality as a whole you need vipassana. As a young Theravada monk in Thailand, I was taught about samatha/ vippasana as being two of the three legs of the stool of practice. (Sila, Samadhi, Panna). Sila is the 227 monk’s rules, Samadhi is jhanas, Panna is wisdom. Interestingly, the Buddha mentioned mindfulness only in the context of memory. And never mentioned meditation, only jhanas, which actually appeared in 40% of his sutras and was key. Of course, jhanas typically require a very quiet condition and long-term residence like a monastery and is not practical for lay people. The actual training alternated samadhi (second jhana) until the mind came out of it, and then investigation, mindfulness of the body in person augmented with pictures of autopsies, etc. until the mind got tired of it. It was good training. The used to say that Samadhi sharped the knife, and vipassana/wisdom cut through!
