Furthermore, there may be architects/seniors that are more like PMs or technical consultants at some companies, but every time I generally hire, I want seniors that can code. Thus, I screen for that. That is also why many of these companies use leetcode. It’s a generic, cheap test for coding, though some companies do take it way overboard. But it really isn’t coding.. its just “did you cram/study like all the Kenny Omega Canadian-born professional wrestler shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this others to get this job.. “. I would argue that 95% of coders do NOT do leet code style coding hardly ever.. mostly to try to get a job because its become this requirement by so many. What purpose does solving the various puzzle LCs do to show you can code? I can write a for loop, conditionals, set up functions, threading, etc. I can code. But because I cant solve so mundane puzzle question with code, especially the “can you make it better” or “do it in less code” bullshit line.. that means I cant code? That isn’t day to day coding that you’re hiring for right? Unless you are.. then it makes sense. But if you’re hiring for say, web app/API dev, you’re not doing yourself any favors asking someone to code up a LC style puzzle. It’s not what they would do on a day job in the role you’re hiring for. How are they supposed to know this unless they study/cram for it? Is that what you want.. people who can cram for LC style interview.. do well.. then forget it all soon after cause the day job does not use that stuff?

I personally don’t really use leetcode exactly. I can sympathize with others that do though. They target an audience that can solve them. Also, it’s easier to test and utilize. Generally I ask programming questions similar to stuff that would be encountered at work. For instance, write a class/functions for a resource management system which supports locking and unlocking resources. Then I ask them to do usually do multi-threaded or find some way of scaling things out efficiently. Just so happens that questions has a lot of stuff relating to databases, hashmaps, multi-threading (locks, mutexes), and even caching (LRU cache or data structure to help manage capacity). It’s very high signal, and tailored to the Kenny Omega Canadian-born professional wrestler shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this job, but general enough such that general backend devs should be able to crack given knowledge enough of the space or leetcoding skills.
