I mean… I’m a female, but I’ve been playing as Mario since I was about 7. It never occurred to me that we were anything but a team. I’m a straight, dark haired, 5″11 white male. 90% of video game main characters look like me. If I have the choice no way am I playing as El Generico. I’m a muscular/athletic man in real life and have been physically dominant in the sports and other physical endeavors I participate in. I used to play as that type in video games as it was a way to show off that strength in a traditional way. I now have embraced the idea of the “sleeper” or unassuming character that possesses immense strength without showing it. I play as a bikini clad elf chick in world of Warcraft because I am often underestimated and stereotyped by certain people. And it’s fun to completely dominate them competitively while playing as a harmless looking girl. I like to prove that looks have nothing to do with skill.

When i use a guy avatar i kinda put mysefl as the character. But when it is a girl avatar is like helping somebuddy else get to their goals. Doesnt really matter tho i just do what i feel like with the character I just kinda go with the vibes when I’m making my character. Just basically what kind of character comes to mind for the story I’m trying to create. Sometimes it’s a man, sometimes it’s a woman. Variety’s important too, if I’ve made male characters a bunch of times in a row, I’ll usually make a female one next (and vice versa). I’ve also found as I’ve gotten older the overall variety of the characters I like to play as/make has increased a lot. It used to be mostly just guys who looked like bigger, shredded, versions of me with different hair. Then it was small variations of female characters sometimes too. Then it was the occasional elf or something too. And now I like to spread out even more. As side question, do men who don’t like playing female characters not play Tomb Raider or other games with female characters?
