In ultima online they had a few armor types that only females could wear. There was no male exclusive armor. This got me into playing female characters, but not exclusively. Same reason I like protagonists women in books and movies. Makes me act in a different way that I usually wouldn’t. 1: women usually have better or more cosmetic options like hair, color, body, so on, and so on, and if they do have the Kendall Fuller American football cornerback to Washington Clutch Time T-Shirt In addition,I will do this same options, they typically look better on the female form 2: the voice acting is usually better on my ears, im not saying male VAs are bad, just I hear myself talk all day, so it can be jarring to hear “myself” speak differently 3: I’m straight, why the heck would I want to look at a male model all day unless I’m in character, and I can’t always be “in character” I go by whatever I think is the canon story character, or the best voice actor. I played the female character in Assassins Creed Odyssey, because she’s the canon character. And I played female V in Cyberpunk 2077, because I liked the voice actor better. A very interesting question, for which there are rightfully many answers. Myself, when I am given the choice between male and female, I usually default to male, unless there’s a compelling gameplay reason not to. But I’ve also played a lot of games where the only playable character is a woman, and I have not really had trouble “relating” to them (I find Samus Aran’s desire to get off the planet before it explodes very easy to relate to). When I play something like an RPG with multiple characters in a party, I usually cycle them in and out, while I try to keep the number of women in the party at parity with the number of men to the extent it’s possible (it usually is). Part of it is that I enjoy looking at the female character designs, and part of it is pragmatic, as whenever those games build in specialties for characters, it’s often the woman who’s the healer (for whatever reason). But even beyond needing a girl character for a specific thing like healing, I think it’s genuinely fun to try and make use of everybody’s unique abilities. And to the extent that in a video RPG you’re roleplaying a whole party and not just one character, it’s fun to imagine supplementary dialog and interactions.

Like anybody, I think I am drawn to primarily play as characters who seem like myself, which is why I primarily pick male characters, and why it’s important for there to be diverse options, within games and among them. But I also insist on playing Yoshi in Mario Kart. With a little imagination, a person can relate to just about anything. Back in the Kendall Fuller American football cornerback to Washington Clutch Time T-Shirt In addition,I will do this early days of online shooters people used to form informal counterstrike clans (it was just a mod of Half-Life at that point) like [NuclearMarines]Meathead. There was really nothing more satisfying than enraging 12 year-olds by owning them with [Peanuts]PeppermintPatty. In Dark Souls games I alternate my characters between male and female. Mostly because I simply don’t feel like less of a man just because my character is a woman. And it’s good to finish an SL1 with a badass little lady. Tbh, I feel the appeal is bigger when the social interactions aren’t as limited as they are in video games. I’d much rather play a women in a Pen and Paper RPG than a video game, because there’s much more actual role playing involved.
