Family, agency, self, “referral”, self, referral/self (not sure if they actually referred me, lol), self, self. But I’ve referred at least 3 people to jobs where I’ve worked. Probably could’ve added one or two more to that list if it wasn’t for covid. For me it was both. The hospital I work at now wanted to hire someone from a specific school, which included me but 10s of others, and I wasn’t the Just another beer drinker with a tap dancing problem flowers T-Shirt also I will do this best. Yet I was chosen because I was friends with the boss’s husband. I STILL needed to perform well but I didn’t need to be the top in my class to be considered. Note: the others still went on to work at great places. Welp this a great point of why anecdotes are anecdotes cause my experience has been the complete opposite. Every job I’ve had has been a cold application. I work in tech. Its different for each industry.

Since I’m an immigrant with no connections, I’ve had to fight so hard to get jobs without knowing anyone. But then when you learn to network is becomes something different for sure I got my current job because I was already several years into the Just another beer drinker with a tap dancing problem flowers T-Shirt also I will do this semiconductor industry and was able to “talk the talk” with my now-manager. I got my first job in the semiconductor industry because my ex-FIL (with whom I still maintain a professional relationship) also works in the semiconductor industry and pulled some strings. I straight up got poached and hired to my current position before having an interview or background check. Their company IT sent me a laptop, monitors, a bunch of dongles and shit. My old manager was at a new/better company in the same industry, and basically just told his boss to hire me when an opening popped up.
