It was my chefs believe that this problem is actually the 2nd biggest cause of obesity and weight problems in children. Our bodies are very good at signaling that we no longer need anymore calories, from feeling full and bloated, to stomach problems, and just your brain itself signaling it is full, our bodies will let us know. The problem comes from forcing kids to eat way past this point will permanently alter their relationship with food. By ignoring our natural ways the body tells us to stop eating, we condition ourselves to need more and more food in order to feel full, causing overeating. Basically we tell our body there is no true stopping point until all food is gone. It can also affect kids the other way, in that they won’t eat enough because of trauma or adverse psychological harm that comes from forcing a child to eat food they don’t enjoy or want. I feel that it is a tricky problem to solve cause it is rooted and generational at this point. Those who were around in the Depression taught their kids to never waste any food and eat everything cause you never know when or how much your next meal will be. This then continues to be passed on in the family generation after generation. You just have to hope someone will break that cycle (me in my family’s case. I have a pretty up and down relationship with food due to my weight)

Yeah, in our house it’s never “empty your plate” but “eat a reasonable amount and at least try one bite of everything”. It’s a balance to make sure they eat enough that they are getting a decently healthy meal and not ending up filling up on junk food later on, and forcing them to eat when they are legitimately full.
