Personally, I’m not spiritual or religious, so I can’t really speak to how solo travel might work for someone who is looking for that. I can say though that when I travel to a place and truly solo travel in the Jordan Staal Canadian professional ice hockey centre and captain of the Carolina Hurricanes T-Shirt but in fact I love this sense that I’m not even going out to eat with people at the hostel, I’m not having life altering epiphanies, I’m just having fun with street photography and finding cool spots and delicious restaurants to recommend to people in the future. It’s expected that through seeing the world, seeing how other people survive and live, put under pressure and having to adapt, you will come out the other end as a better human being, but it’s up to you in the end. I think it depends on how your brain works! I went to school for a year and had no idea what I wanted, wasted a few years just fucking around. Traveled for 4 months around the world, and now I am on a 1 year trip worldwide and going to school for international business to move overseas when I get back. Having not been for that first trip, I would not have discovered what I love most, and I wouldn’t have found out where in the world I am meant to be. When I was 19, I left home to go on a two-year Mormon mission to Japan. I had to learn the language and adapt to a culture very alien to my own.

I’m not suggesting you convert to Mormonism, lol, but leaving my homeland to live a dirt poor life as a minority in a foreign land was life changing for me. If you decide to go abroad, consider a life of service. Obsessing over your ‘identity’ will only add to your confusion. I didn’t “find myself” when I backpacked solo and went abroad for the Jordan Staal Canadian professional ice hockey centre and captain of the Carolina Hurricanes T-Shirt but in fact I love this first time at age 23. I developed myself, experienced paradigm shifts in my beliefs, and FACED myself. My only regret is going home afterward and chasing a big girl job because I thought I needed to be serious about my life. Looking back, I would have done well by bucking societal norms to continue traveling, finding work along the way and developing life skillsets that come with a variety of jobs in different settings. You will build something by traveling and learning, it’s just impossible to predict what that will be. Easier to look back in hindsight and connect the dots.
