And one version that had an extra shader effect, and terrible colors, that went for 15 quid because it’s “epic” rarity. Naturally, that’s the one everyone would buy, or else they’d look poor. It was $5. And I’d still say that’s too expensive for 2 skins and 1 model. Especially in a game where you could easily find better additions in the form of mods for free at the time it released. I think people today still think of $3 for a lame cosmetic in a single player game to be highway robbery. It’s only in a multiplayer game that you’re going to play with other people for hundreds of hours of where it seems reasonable.

It’s not that horse armor succeeded, it’s that in its failure every game company decided that if they wanted to make the real dough, they needed to take their single player games and try to transform them into multiplayer “games as a service” monstrosities. If people had bought the horse armor, I think Fallout 76 would never have been a multiplayer game, and a bunch of flops like Anthem and Redfall would never have existed. When I first heard about them I was actually excited about the prospect of buying little addons for like 25 or 50 cents. 20+ bucks for a skin is just absurd to me. The best part is when they sell a skin for $20 and then try to sell a recolor for $20. They literally take an existing asset, play with the color slider for 5 minutes, and then its done. In some games, they do need to increase the file size for new textures, but other games like ESO don’t need to do this for recoloring. It’s silly, and almost every conceivable production cost is an unnecessary step.
