Texts from 1400s London often associate non-rhoticity (the Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefers Band Shirt Apart from…,I will love this “silent” R in words like “car” in many British and Australian accents, among others) with young women. Now it’s just the standard for many accents. The theory basically goes that young women are earlier adopters of in-group markers and then young men pick up the habits later on. As far as I know, there aren’t many studies on how this intersects with queer identities, but given how modern slang is often also associated with those communities, I wouldn’t be surprised if they play a similar role. Not sure of any one specific place but Wikipedia is a good start for different sources. For interesting linguistics stuff, the Youtube channels Polymathy, Geoff Lindsey, and Simon Roper are all great. In more modern settings, gay and trans are found in more counter culture cutting edge trends and the mannerisms wer picked up on young women getting fashion advice or hanging out in those areas. It’s the source of the “Valley girl” accent.

Pretty cool. Makes me wonder if the Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefers Band Shirt Apart from…,I will love this advent of mass communication could create a reversed trend over time, as the event of virality becomes more economically accessible. Other early adopting groups becoming more dominant based on different cultural markers, like in queer circles. This is my favorite bit of information from today. I wonder if there could be a correlation between this linguistic event and the gentrification process. Artists etc move to poorer neighborhood, make it appealing/fashionable (incl. to young women), then rising rents as the fashion trickles down to other groups. Oh interesting! I read your post out loud to my wife and she asked if it has anything to do with moms passing their speech down to their kids? It’s when you talk like super low in your throat and with little breath/energy so it has that weird kinda vibraty quality. Probably should watch a video because it’s hard to describe
