I live in Arkansas and the closest shelter to me is the local high school 10 minutes up the road. We live in the middle of the city and can’t afford a shelter of our own. But I also wonder what the actual benefit would be. Like the number needed to treat in medicine. Of the people seriously injured by tornadoes, how many of them would have gotten into such a shelter if it were available? I’ll bet the number is vanishingly small, and makes it too easy for lawmakers to not do anything because of the expense.

I don’t know anyone living in substandard housing (RVs, trailers, old buildings) that aren’t scared shitless of tornados and high wind events because they are always very damaging. Oddly, most of the Jackson Browne 2023 summer tour thank you for the memories signature shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this people you see out filming the tornado in the front yard is someone with a basement who knows they don’t have to go very far if shit hit the fan. In the last 2 years, almost every single “severe thunderstorm” warning has upgraded to a tornado watch or tornado warning, with multiple confirmed tornados per year. And it’s always at night, you get ready to go to bed to a thunderstorm just to be woken up at 2am like clockwork because “SURPRISE!” a tornado has formed at the tail end of the event. I believe a change was made to tornado warnings where they are doing a full warning when radar detects a tornado signature. In the past, I believe they waited for some kind of ground confirmation.
