They all do have quite a few Swedish tourists though so I guess you get more exposure that way. Isn’t it just that the Swedes you meet refuse to speak slow? That’s often a big problem in my opinion. I’m half Norwegian but I can’t understand my relatives from Bergen when they start going and talk in their regular speed with each other. Spaniard here, Portuguese has sounds that we don’t so if you’re not exposed to them it’s hard for us to understand them. Portuguese has a lot of vowel sounds that Spanish lacks. Also there are consonants missing in Portuguese words that are present in Spanish. For instance Arena is Areia and Luna is Lua. This causes the words to sound garbled to the ears of Spanish speakers. I know because I’ve learned both languages, Spanish first then later Brazilian Portuguese. All the strange vowel sounds was one of hardest parts. Very good question! Same goes to russian and ukrainian (Ukrainians are like Portuguese here). Apparently it is quite common in Europe, wich is very interesting. Also I believe there is a way to answer to that without going into much details like what sounds in particular language are harder to pronounce etc. Isn’t the vocabulary a bit different as well between Ukrainian and Russian? A linguist I once spoke to described Ukrainian as “Polish vocabulary but with Russian grammar”.

You have really good answers here. One point I dont see is effort and exposure. In Portugal since kids we have spanish influences, be cartoons, movies, music, some restaurants, etc. We are used to pass by our neigbours and try to let out some spanish. “Hola como estás?” is almost a mix of portuguese and spanish that both countries understand and in Portugal we tend to joke a bit with this sentences. My personal experience is that the Iowa VS South Carolina WBB 2024 National Championship Matchup Shirt it is in the first place but same dosent hapen in Spain, we can have 3 or 4 cartoon characters speaking spanish for the sake of it, they will have all of them spanish an 0 portuguese. The exposure of our culture on their side is way less. And then there is the effor part and this I am talking about personal experience here, take it as it is. As I said early im portugal whe tend to like and try the spanish accent, never saw a spanish friend try to even let a portuguese word like “Caralho” (and its one of the words we love to teach to otsiders). Had a teacher in University that she worked ther for 6 year prior to my starting year, every old student tried to get a portuguese word from her, nothing. She literaly teaching in a portuguese university for years withought even haven spoken a portugueses word. She only speaks spanish, fully understands portuguese (I never spoke spanish to her either) and admits that she dosent want to take the effort to try our language “you understand me just fine I have nothign to change, if you dont understan learn spanish we are a way bigger country” was her words when asked. Its not a all spanish are like this, but is my personal experience with this topic.
