It didn’t occur to me to be offended. I just reply that I don’t speak Spanish, and we either try to communicate anyway or the person moves on. I’m in the US and I speak some Spanish, but I’m pretty rusty, so if someone wanted to converse with me in Spanish, they’d have better luck if they opened by asking me if I spoke Spanish, as opposed to just diving right into the conversation at full speed. I wouldn’t be offended if someone did the latter– I just wouldn’t have time to “switch gears” so to speak, and likely wouldn’t process what they were saying to me very well. This happens to me a lot as well and I kind of do get offended. It’s because I look very hispanic even though I have no hispanic ethnicity. But then I actually do speak Spanish with a high degree of fluency so I just respond to their question in Spanish lol I kind of get where your friend is coming from. Sometimes it feels really condescending to ask someone “Do you speak English?”. Usually I’ll say hello in the local language and then proceed to ask my question in English. It comes across as more of an attempt to communicate than a request that you speak my language. If they understand, great. If they don’t, no harm done.
