I always put up with his behaviour because he had just always been this way and I felt as if “I can’t be mad at this behaviour because he has always been like that” So anyway, my partners dad got married a few months ago and when I got to see him afterwards the Inside Every Older Person Is A Younger Person Cat shirt and by the same token and first thing he said to me was “You looked awful in that suit” and it all hit me. This person has never said anything nice to me, never congratulated me. I’m not the best looking man in the world, and it was not the suit comment directly more just “I’m your friend why would you say that? just say nothing at all if that is what you think?” I just told him “I think i’m done with you mate, I cannot take your negativity” He just responded that he understood and that was that. I blocked him on everything I use, steam battle.net etc.. and we have not spoken since then. Honestly my mental health has been so much better. We don’t share lifts to work anymore so i’m not in a bad mood from listening to his negative attitude on the drive. I don’t have to deal with his nasty comments. It feels like a massive weight has been lifted from me I wish I had done it sooner.

Slightly different as your friend seems to be not quite on the Inside Every Older Person Is A Younger Person Cat shirt and by the same token and level or arsehole but you don’t have to put up with stuff just because they have always been your friend. Immediately thought about The Banshees of Inisherin the second I saw the title of this post Great film though! But seriously OP plz ask your friend to get some help. It’s emotionally draining to befriend with a depressed person, but plz persuade him to seek some help & medication from professionals. This is the answer, threaten to cut one of your fingers off each time he tries to talk to you, and tell him you just don’t like him anymore. Holy shit. I am so glad I asked. This might be my greatest win on Reddit so far because I’ve never heard of that movie and it looks genuinely amazing. Thank you, kind Redditor. Question is, do you really want to end the friendship or do you just want him to help himself so he can be a better person to spend time with? 30 years is a lot of history to just write off. The guy sounds super depressed to me (been there, still am but I now have the tools to drag myself up by the boot straps when I need to rather than making others suffer). He sounds like he needs a good talking to, a bit of a reality check and you to point him in the right direction to seek help, and then leave it with him. Only he can help himself after all. You don’t have to be his counsellor but you might be the guy that indirectly saves his life with a bit of a compassionate kick up the ass that he sounds like he so desperately needs…Don’t be afraid to set boundaries though, if he is well aware that him not sorting his shit out will result in you not wanting any more to do with him and still does nothing then that’s entirely on him.
