Straight white people being mundanely stupid as always. Real policies need to be addressed but here you all are talking discussing the In April We Wear Orange Infertility Awareness Rainbow T-Shirt moreover I love this semantics of genitalia and things that are not happening in the community. Yes and no. What people are going on about, minors undergoing surgery to alter their physical appearance, it’s too often spoken about like it’s just for funsies, on a whim, or “a phase”. That is not happening. Truth is, gender affirming surgeries are not happening unless you are at LEAST 16 years old or older in the US (depends on state laws), with diagnosis from both a physician and licensed counselor/therapist, and guardian approval (unless emancipated, in that case the minor would be considered their own guardian). And that only applies to top surgery, bottom surgery you have to wait till 18. Even once the decision is made, patients often have to wait several months to years to be able to receive treatment. This applies to cis gender affirming care as well. Most of the time as a minor you will be limited to hormonal treatments. Hormonal treatments can begin sooner than that, but I’m not sure at what age. Still, hormonal treatments are approved by mental and physical health professionals. It is generally safe and not permanent if someone chooses to stop treatment or detransition at any time. There are also people who are born intersex, with both female and male anatomy, at least externally, and surgery is performed to make the child fit into our “socially acceptable” gender & body part norms/expectations. So what happens if the doctors choose the wrong sex for the child? They wind up being called trans for being forced into a binary role from birth. Honestly, science doesn’t care about our silly feelings and how we think things should be— biology and life is complicated. There are phenotypical (physical appearance) women born with XY chromosomes, and phenotypical men born with XX, some people are even XXY. Sometimes the SRY gene fails to develop on the Y. There’s a multitude of variants that can occur and the X/Y chromosomes are not solely responsible for gender. It is standard practice to ignore the actual biology, and define a newborn’s gender based on their external appearance alone. They don’t do the testing for it unless requested or there is a relevant health complication. It just happens. Aside from reproductive complications, this can also cause (but is not the only cause of) gender dysphoria which can come along with depression, and thoughts of harming oneself. Suicide rates of trans youth are high, so when someone feels they are not cisgender, despite age, it is critical to their health and safety to address gender concerns with a professional to assess the situation. Idk about everyone else, but I’d much rather have someone confuse another mental health disorder for being trans (a counselor is supposed to rule this out before gender affirming care is considered) and be able to address that as simply an experience to help shape who they are at some point in their life than people, children, harming themselves and never having the chance to live their life. I personally believe, from my own observation and experiences/interactions with queer youth, there are more trans minors than not who are NOT receiving hormonal treatment (and you can’t get approved for surgery unless you have been doing that for a while first. It’s a long process). As a minor, changes in pronouns, clothing, wearing binders, tucking, packing, etc. Are much more common and pretty typical for trans youth and those exploring their identity long before any life-altering decisions are made. These people often have known they were not their assigned gender at birth since early childhood, and it grows into an intense problem as society, family, pupils, teachers, etc. start pushing and forcing stereotypes and gender roles onto them. Even as adults, many trans people have to go through years of struggling, being unheard, dismissed, belittled, and having to jump through hoops to be able to receive needed gender affirming care, and it is a million times more difficult to receive that care as a minor.

In short, it only happens when not receiving care would result in harm to the In April We Wear Orange Infertility Awareness Rainbow T-Shirt moreover I love this patient, when doctors or parents want an intersex child to have one or the other, or if it’s medically necessary during infanthood. Some likely are. But its a very small group of people. Transgender people are only about 1 in 200 people. So at any given age in the US (about 4 million people) there are only 20,000 or so people in that group will be transgender, and far fewer who will start the transition while they are still teenagers. So kids who are getting the surgeries are a minority of an already very small group of people. The only people I have met who have gone through this process are over 21. These people are either funded with the help of their folks, or they are disowned and foot the bill themselves. The amount of hoops necessary to go through, including a shrinks’ permission, have been and continue to be hard enough for a single, mature adult.
