That is your only real option. The other options will damage your career. They are not going to pay you fairly when that time does come. You can ask for it in writing all you want, it’s just going to place a HR target on your forehead. Figure out what the pay raise should be. Then I’d tell my bosses that if I’m doing the job, then I want the title and will accept HALF the pay raise for 3 months. The 3 months is a probationary period. After 3 months, they give me the other half of the raise, or I go back to my old position & pay. I’d be willing to negotiate to 6 months. If you like the company and do not want to leave, I’d tell them you want a modest raise upfront due to the extra effort. I’d also ask for a probationary period of like 90 days in writing where they will either give you a full raise and title change or you will go back to your old position. If they won’t do it, you shouldn’t do it.

Edit: What really gets me is they won’t even give you the In a World Where You Can Be Anything Be Kind Sunflower Leopard T-Shirt and I love this title, which doesn’t cost them anything. They kind of sound like shitters. Use the “title” as leverage and start looking around. The more time they can have you doing manager tasks but paying you less the better for them I would let them know you will accept the role if “comfortable” becomes a set if clearly defined goals. In writing I would take it. If they fuck you over, you can start looking for a new job of the same rank and higher expected pay later on, but this is an opportunity to get higher leadership experience. I would take it and run with it. Give them a timeline…no wiggle room. Dress it up but something to the extent that you’ll give them x months…the end of which will be the promised promotion and raise or you return to your current position. Make sure you drive that time frame home and if you agree, remind them of it throughout the trial period. I did some similar and it actually worked out pretty well for me at the time…was almost 20yrs ago but I almost doubled my salary. I can pretty much guarantee you will never get that pay raise unless you demand it now. Why would you assume extra duties for the same pay? COVER YOUR ASS. Get that shit in writing and make those fuckers sign and date it to ensure they acknowledge it.
