Design flaws is an overstatement. I think it’s more correct to say designs have gotten better. Catan has 2 minor drawbacks. initial board states can set up for long, more boring games. If certain resources can only be collected on 2,11,12 then it’s going to be a slog. due to random dice, players may not receive any resources for several of their turns and be left with nothing to do on one to several turns. Other gateway games like Ticket to Ride (at least gain resources every turn) or Carcassonne (get to play a tile every turn) attempt to give you more agency each time your turn comes up, not relying on dice. So I’ve owned terraforming Mars for a few years now but it is still in its plastic wrapping. I’m a huge lover of catan…is it time to finally unwrap terraforming mars? It is pretty great.
