In Australia we get hit with a mix depending on what school you went to. I say ‘zee’, my wife says ‘zed’, despite being raised in the I’m sorry did I roll my eyes out loud T-Shirt and I will buy this same state. A tip I often find useful, if a language is named after a county. The way the words are pronounced in said country is the correct way. Am Canadian and have always pronounced it zee. Plus there is that damn tune thing where you rhyme off the alphabet (ends “now I know my ABC’s”… etc) If you end it …QRS, TUV, Double-you,XY ZED…. Sounds really dumb. IMHO Well generally I pronounce any letter the same way and I’m American… Med, Ged, Ted, Led. Why wouldn’t you add unnecessary letters and sounds? /s They had to spell the character name out in the Police Academy movies “Zed”. I’m guessing because they were filmed in Canada and nobody noticed that Americans wouldn’t understand it until it was too late. But I am only guessing. Canadian here, who grew up watching Sesame Street on American television. KSPS out of Spokane, WA, to put a fine point on it. I’ve always said “zee”, which was what I was taught when I first learned the alphabet in school. As I remember it, the song’s lyrics are “…Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y and zee”, not “zed”. Zed doesn’t rhyme with ‘vee’, no one at my school was taught to say ‘zed’. That seemed to come along later. And it stuck, too. Often times, when I say ‘zee’ in front of another Canadian, they pounce on me and correct me. Fuck ’em, I’m gonna keep right on saying “zee”.

I’ve actually brought this up with a fair few Canadians and most have told me it’s zed, but only if you care about being proper. Otherwise most of them say zee. Oh youre all using the I’m sorry did I roll my eyes out loud T-Shirt and I will buy this metric system? Im using the imperial! Oh everyone is pronouncing this like Zed? Im going to say Zee! As youtube/ american tv is more prevalent for children now in foreign countries educators are seeing a lot of children come into education using both. Parents teach them Zed, Tv teaches them Zee. I’m Australian and I am constantly correcting my child about Zeebra vs Zebra. Isn’t just because zed is z in French and all European royalty was hella inbred and spoke French in court, so all the upper class people just went with zed and it trickled down?
